What Makes a Good Candidate for Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is designed to help women correct hormonal imbalance in the body. Pregnancy, menopause, and baby blues can send women over to a doctor to get hormone therapy. Also, men experience hormonal fluctuations with age, diet, and stress. However, some hormone fluctuations can be normal so how would you know if you are a good candidate for HRT? Hormone replacement therapy might be good for you if the following is true to your situation:

Your Tests Show you Don’t Have Enough of a Hormone

Doctors will test if you need HRT. If your body is producing a normal hormone level, they will not advise you to get the therapy. It’s important to understand that just because you enter the menopausal stage you are automatically deficient of estrogen. When doctors test hormone levels, they test the individual amount of a hormone, in addition to the ratios with other body hormones.

You Have Symptoms Not Appropriate for your Age

If you are a healthy woman in your 30s, you should be experiencing menopause-related symptoms such as hot flashes, dryness, and headaches. But, if you are experiencing these symptoms, you are going through perimenopause. This is when your body’s hormone levels are declining before they should be. Getting your hormone level tested with blood tests and saliva is important if you have these symptoms at an early age. Also, HRT is important if you are experiencing severe menopausal symptoms. The therapy will slowly reduce your hormones.  Spreading out the changes over al longer period can decrease or eliminate the symptoms.

You are Experiencing Chronic Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue can be experienced at some point in life because of natural life stresses. However, if you are experiencing chronic adrenal fatigue and your body has stopped producing appropriate levels of DHEA hormone, you will need to consider hormone therapy. Chronic adrenal fatigue will result in weight gain, depression, low libido, premature aging, and osteoporosis. Thus, if you are experiencing these symptoms for quite some time, you might be a good candidate for HRT.

To determine if HRT is a good treatment option for you, consult with your doctor about your symptoms and health risks. Make sure to continue the consultation throughout your menopausal years. Recommendations from doctors may change as studies learn more about hormone therapy and other treatments for menopausal symptoms. In case you still experience troubling menopausal symptoms, review your treatment options with your doctor regularly.
